12 NOVEMBER 2007 • It is with great sadness to report that Franco Rao, president of the Italian Melges 24 Class passed away suddenly on Saturday while sailing in Anzio at a Finn Regatta.

Franco was a great facilitator in the Italian Class as well as internationally. Over the last few years, the increase in participation from the Italian Melges 24s can be attributed to Franco's deep love for the Melges 24. A Finn sailor by trade he was an enormous personality within the sailing community — especially in Europe.

He was 48 years old and it is supposed that he passed away at the onset of a massive heart attack during a windward leg. He collapsed within the boat, but by the time that rescue reached him which was very quickly, nothing could be done to revive.

On behalf of the U.S. Melges 24 Class Association, it is with great sadness and sincerity that we express our deepest condolences to Franco's family and closest friends as well as the Italian Melges 24 Class upon hearing of this sudden and deep loss. The Melges 24 class is filled with amazing personalities and great accomplishments. It is at this time that we remember — recognize Franco's invaluable talents and contributions to the Melges 24 class. His vibrant personality and obvious, apparent dedication, a truly exceptional sailor and human being will be greatly missed.
