| CORINTHIAN EXCLUSIVE: BORA GULARI IS 2007 AUDI MELGES 24 U.S. NATIONAL CORINTHIAN CHAMPION | |||
Under light, variable conditions and plentiful sunshine the fleet was surprised to have some decent breeze after yesterday's breeze did not look promising. With races starting on time, flat water and 5-7 knots of breeze the fleet went racing and completed all races schedule for the event. For the Corinthians in the fleet, progress within the fleet was slow. Tough starts and missed shifts really hurt those that need big results in order to maintain a decent score. In race one overnight leader Paul Hulsey on Hoodlum and second overall Mike Dow on Toaster were buried three rows back in the start, then went right. A double whammie as the slow start didn't help and a shifting breeze worked against the right. Those that stayed more left included Marc Hollerbach on Fu rounding the top mark first in the Corinthian division (rounding seventh overall), then USMCA President Scott Gregory on Team Satisfaction, Gulari taking his place in the rounding in third, followed by Fred Rozelle on 'Rustler and Alex Shafer on Sweaty Betty. Hollerbach called the shifts on the first downwind run moving up to fourth overall. Gregory and Gulari split the difference at the gate rounding almost simultaneously. During the last half of the race Hollerbach's progress slipped a little leaving him to finish fifth. Gulari moved up to finish seventh overall. The next best Corinthian finish was Shaffer back in fifteenth overall. Race two proved to be sensational for Gulari as his results just got better. A fourth place finish overall secured the title for the Flyer crew. For Dow and Hulsey it was too little, too late. Poor results of 25th for Hulsey and 12th for Dow sent them falling in the overalls. Shaffer on the other hand held on to a nineth place finish. Third Corinthian finish was Dow. Besides the extraordinary team of Gulari, Holzman, Drummond and Firestone taking the eight place spot overall, Alex Shafer and his crew of Justin Hood, Josh Willis and Bill Wiggins are the only other Corinthian crew that made the top ten overalls too in ninth. Third in the Corinthian standing was Mike Dow and his Flying Toaster crew of Bob Clark, Brad Savage and Greg Diehl. FINAL CORINTHIAN OVERALL RESULTS 1.) Bora Gulari/Chuck Holzman, Flyer 2.)
