| CORINTHIAN EXCLUSIVE: PAUL HULSEY TAKES CHARGE IN DETROIT | |||
The day commenced under beautiful conditions with a fifty-five boat strong Melges 24 fleet looking to go racing right away. The breeze settled in and Mike Dow took charge at the first mark rounding in first, other Corinthians swinging the top ten was Alex Shaffer on Sweaty Betty and Detroit's own Bora Gulari at the helm for Chuck Holzman on Flyer. This was just the beginning for Gulari as he had a really great day out on the water. With lighter air beginning to take hold and getting shiftier by the minute, a shake-up in the fleet was in order producing devestating results for some and advancement opportunties for others. Those that got the upper hand was USMCA President and IMCA Vice Chairman Scott Gregory on Team Satisfaction from Marietta, Georgia as he rounded through the gate in the first corinthian position taking over the lead, Gulari hot on his heels. Geoffery Pierini from Ocean City, New Jersey on Gazoo pulled up for contention alongside of Shafer, rounding third and fourth respectively. As the race progressed the wind ever so slightly, but noticably more than before as Gulari eventually moved to the front taking a fourth place position in the overalls and a first Corinthian. Shaffer took second Corinthian and Hulsey was third. The second race was another Corinthian takeover with Dow, Hulsey and Gulari out on the right off the start. The right paid off big at the weathermark with Dow and Marty Jensen on Moxie rounding big in the top ten. Hulsey getting in on the action too as he and Dow battled their way up into the top five. Dow finished beautifully as first place Corinthian and fourth overall, Hulsey was second and Jensen third place Corinthian — all finishing in the top ten! Local Detroit fleet captain Greg McCliment on Cujo was fourth Corinthian and Marc Hollerbach on Fu was fifth. The last race of the day was more intense as the Corinthians proved that not only can they handle the heavy air conditions, but that the light air was no deterent for awesome results. Gulari continued his campaign as he landed the first place Corinthian spot, fourth overall while Hollerbach gladly took second and Shafer was third. Simon Strauss on Gill maintained a top ten position throughout ending up fourth Corinthian and Fred Rozelle in fifth, whose crew is mostly made up of his immediate family — wife Janet, sons Steven and Curtis. His fifth-membered crew is Leigh Savage on Rustler. FULL CORINTHIAN OVERALL RESULTS 1.) Paul Hulsey, Hoodlum 2.) Mike Dow, Toaster 3.) Alex Shafer, Sweaty Betty 4.)
