SPECIAL UPDATE: 2006 GOLD CUP REGATTA, SAIL NEWPORT

21 JULY 2006 • The US GOLD CUP is coming fast around the corner (August 18th to 20th) with about three weeks to go. It is promising to be an exciting fleet showing up from as far away as Charleston, Detroit and even San Diego, and includes some of the top sailors in the world including Kenny Read and Vince Brun who will be squaring off against some of the great regular fleet pro and Corinthian performers like Team Lightwave, Sean Scarborough’s Rhino, Team Riot, Geoff Perini, Bill Carleton, Bill Blank and Team Adrenaline.

Right now we have ten to twelve entries who have confirmed, though I have spoken to a number of you who have said you are coming. Don’t wait to sign up, just do it now. This past Sail Newport regatta we had a very close fleet of competitors and great wind for 75% of the racing, with nice planning conditions and great ocean swells to surf. The sea breeze in August is extremely dependable and comes in around 15 to 18 knots. Some important notices for competitors or those looking to race:

PRIZES
There will be overall trophies (1st to 4th) and Corinthian Trophies (top 3) – and each of the winners will receive North Sails monogrammed gear, thanks to their sponsorship

SOCIAL EVENTS
There will be social events every night at Sail Newport (Friday and Sunday) and the New York Yacht Club (Saturday), which is a great place to unwind and catch a drink post-race while seeing the best view of the harbor that Newport has to offer. Afterwards, we have arranged for special dinner and drink discounts for the crews at the Fastnet – Newport’s Newest Sailor Bar!

Or, in Middletown, RI (5 to 10 minute drive) there are many economic places to put your crew up including Motel 6, Holiday Inn Express, Ramada, Howard Johnsons and many other selections to keep to your sailing budget.
