BRIAN PORTER LEADS THE NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP AFTER ONE DAY OF RACING!

18 MAY 2006 - Thirty-one Melges 24s took the playing field today with only one consistent comment, "these conditions are very typical for Santa Cruz." More than one, more than a dozen competitors shared this sentiment as three races were conducted under absolutely beautiful blue skies and lots of sunshine.

Reigning North American Champion Argyle Campbell is in attendance with a brand new crew. "The racing was pretty much up-and-down, up-and-down, very unpredictable conditions. The first two races were not typical Santa Cruz, the last race was." In the words of Brian Porter, "We made some mistakes but not too many. We got an okay start, not a great start so we tried not to make too many mistakes after that." Harry Melges, III calling tactics for Porter said, "Santa Cruz is an awesome place to sail." "Because this is the North Americans, we would have loved to had a few more boats," said Bret Gripenstraw, Regatta Chair and helm of Sofa King Fast . " We would like to anticipate having close to 100 boats for the World Championship in 2007."

MOST IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCE OF THE DAY
Dave Ullman had an interesting race day. After a somewhat confusing start on the first race which at one point he was approximately four minutes behind the fleet, Ullman managed to catch back up with and land a twelvth place finish. Then turned around in race two and three and earned a bullet each. "We didn't lose the regatta today, but we didn't win it either."
