SCOTT HOLMGREN WINS 2006 LAKEFEST REGATTA

26 APRIL 2006 • Congratulations to Scott Holmgren on Rosebud as he is the 2006 Melges 24 Lakefest Champion. This legendary event provided good solid breeze for all but one of the days, perfect temperatures and the race committee did a great job with the multiple fleets and getting in as many races as allowed.

Friday was a drifter. Even to the end of the only race attempted, leads changed in the last 100 yards with Holmgren, Bayerdorffer/Eller, and Mayo all within a few boat lengths of the finish line at the gun. I enjoyed the rule that you only have to lead at the end as we did not lead many other times. In approximately 5 more boat lengths Bayerdorffer/Eller would have overtaken us however.

Winds for Saturday ranged from 5-15 knots. There was great racing for the 3 races with wind pressure making for gains and losses on all the legs. Someone else needs to help with the details of each race. All I can remember is being late to gybe several times and the inflicted pain. Leads traded frequently giving an overall tie for low score after 4 races, 2nd place was 2 points back and Barking Fish not far behind with a rookie Melges skipper at the helm.

Sunday started off with a bang with 20-25 knots dropping to approximately 10-15 in the end of the second and final race. Scott Holmgren and crew had the best combination of up and downwind speed in the bigger breeze. Bayerdorffer/Eller pushed them several times around the course but could not establish a permanent lead allowing Scott a win in the last two races sealing his wrap on the regatta.

3.) Bayerdorffer,Bryan - 2, 2, 3, 4*, 2, 2 = 11
4.) Bryan,Mark - 4*, 4, 4, 3, 4, 3 = 18
